Fishkill Rural Cemetery will be remembering veterans in their annual Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 30, 2022 at 11:00 AM at the Dubois Chapel, located near the front of the cemetery grounds at 801 U.S. 9, Fishkill, NY 12524.
Join Keynote Speaker, Jennifer Voigtschild, a graduate of West Point, Retired U.S Army Lt. Colonel, and current Editor-In-Chief of American Spirit Magazine, as the community reflects on the service and sacrifice of veterans, surrounded by beautiful stained-glass windows. The Dubois Chapel, which was originally completed in 1889, was completely renovated in 2008 thanks to the generosity of several donors.
“We are thrilled to have Lt. Colonel Voigtschild as the keynote speaker for our much-anticipated annual Memorial Day Event at the Dubois Chapel. Our cemetery is the final resting place for thousands of local families, many of whom were veterans who selflessly served our country,” Sterling Gaston, board president of Fishkill Rural Cemetery stated, “It is both our honor and duty to commemorate Memorial Day with our beloved community.”
Among the Fishkill Rural Cemetery’s resting veterans, is a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient from the Battle of Cold Harbor (1864), Elijah Briggs. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military honor for his bravery at Petersburg, Virginia, on April 3, 1865 – one of 19 soldiers cited for valor during that battle.
“These were the community members who sacrificed, toiled, and built the community we know today. We owe those folks a debt of gratitude for the progress and freedoms upon which this community was able to build and prosper. Here, close to nature’s calm and quiet, our family, friends, and neighbors laid to final rest are in nearby attendance, proudly watching the successes of their Fishkill community,” Gaston continued.
The Fishkill Rural Cemetery includes natural features such as ponds and mature trees. Roads and paths follow the natural contours of the land, and the picturesque landscape provides a place for the general public to partake in calm serenity while reflecting on those in their final resting places.
